Swimming Pool Chemicals Guide
65Among the many precautions that you should have in consideration if you
have a swimming pool, one that deserves special attention is the chemical
treatment of the water, such as the use of chlorine. It is this chemical that
keeps the water healthy, that eliminates bacteria and other micro organisms
that might cause some common diseases, such as ringworm, athlete’s foot and more
often, varied inflammations in the eyes, nose and ears.
Chlorine eliminates these threats in a highly
effective manner, without presenting any danger to health, provided, of course,
that it is used properly and in appropriate proportion. Therefore, you should always keep in kind the volume of your pool in order to know the correct value of the doses required.
One peculiarity of chlorine is that it becomes inactive when it is brought into contact with substances that it eliminates: in other words, it "works only once." So, it disappears with time, which means that this treatment is an operation that you should perform regularly. As such, we recommend you purchase a device measuring the levels of chlorine, you will be able to it find in any establishment of accessories for pools to make sure that is always within the desired values.
You will be able to find chlorine and other water treatment chemicals not only in stores specialized in products related to the maintenance of swimming pools, but also on shops that carry accessories for sports and entertainment. They are usually available in tablets or granular powder, both equally effective (although the first one is probably easier to use). If you choose the tablet version, you should not put it in the pool and expect it to dissolve. Not that it does not mind you, but if you do, the distribution of chlorine will take place in a wrong way and eventually focus on the water that surrounds the tablet, not spreading to the entire pool. Additionally, water with high concentrations of chlorine could damage the filter. So the best way to apply it is via a floating container for distribution, that will determine the correct amount of chlorine and a homogenously release it throughout the pool.
If you decide to use the swimming pool chemicals that come in granular form, you should basically follow the same lines described before: never throw the entire dose at once, but spread it across the pool. The ideal way is to dissolve the chemicals in a bucket with water from the pool itself, and then pouring it into the pool for a better distribution. The best time to do this treatment is at night, or alternatively, the end of the day, when it is not used again. The chlorine loses effectiveness with high temperatures, and as such, is more appropriate to let it work through the night. By doing this, it also ensures that it meets a certain rest period.
After all of this, make sure to check the chemical levels from time to time. It doesn’t require much work, but will ensure the water quality, and protect the health of all the people that use the swimming pool.
In conclusion:
- Use a device to measure and monitor the level of chlorine other water treatment chemicals you use.
- Apply the swimming pool chemicals in the evening.
- Use the correct amount chemicals by taking in consideration the volume of your pool.
- If you use tablet versions, use a floating distributor. If not, mix the chemicals in a bucket with water from the pool before applying them.
Good diving!
